Sights in Chiusa & Villandro

A village with history

Characteristic, kissed by the sun, set amidst vineyards, chestnut trees and quiet grazing fields ... Villandro is on the south side of the Sarentine Alps, at an altitude of 880 m, right in the green heart of South Tyrol. The town territory goes from the vineyards 550 metres away, including chestnut trees and soft slopes, to the enchanting Villandro Mount, 2,509 m.

that ...

… the first inhabitants of the Villandro region date back to 6,000 years ago?
At the end of the seventies, during some building works on the Plunacker site, in the heart of the town of Villandro, some remains were found dating back to the Stone Age, the Romans and the Middle Age. Visit the Villandro Archeopark for a journey through ancient times ...

One place, a lot to see: Villandro & Chiusa

The old town centre

Defregger Alley in Villandro was used as the backdrop for the “Das letzte Aufgebot” painting by Franz von Defregger.

Church / cemetery

The most beautiful cemetery in South Tyrol

Cemeteries are certainly not a tourist attraction! But the cemetery of Villandro is really special. Differently from the rest of the region, here crosses and graves are set so that our beloved who have passed away are facing the sunrise. And those visiting their loved ones take place behind the crosses, forged by the blacksmith of Villandro.

Villandro mine

The history of the Villandro mine started over 3,000 years ago and continued up to the twentieth century. Descend into this underground world ...

Chiusa

Chiusa, the town of artists

Walking through medieval alleys framed by characteristic colourful facades, and loosing yourself in the beauty of the spectacular alpine landscape that can be admired from the Tschanberg Mountain, just like painter Albrecht Dürer in his times.

Villnöss and Puez Geisler

The postcard motif of South Tyrol, i.e. the village of St. Magdalena in the Val di Funes Valley, is located at the foot of the Puez Geisler Nature Park. From Villandro you can reach this picturesque setting in just a few kilometres. The valley offers fantastic panoramic hiking trails and great alpine huts for refreshments.

Brixen
Klausen

Bressanone, a bishop's seat

And the oldest city in Tyrol. Enjoy a walk through the winding streets and a visit to the Abbey of Novacella, near Bressanone. This largest monastery complex in Tyrol was once considered the eighth wonder of the world. The Engelsburg Castle, the late baroque collegiate church, the miracle fountain, the historic monastery garden... there is much to see here.

The Plose and the Woody adventure mountain trekking

The Plose is the perfect excursion mountain for everyone who loves action and fun. Take the cable car up to the panoramic mountain station and then continue along the Woody Walk theme trail to the Rossalm. The 9 km long ride with the mountain carts from the Plose to the valley is great fun for young and old.

Brixen
Bolzano

The provincial capital of Bolzano

Alpine character meets Italian style and La Dolce Vita. Definitely worth seeing: the Via dei Portici (ideal for a walk), the fruit market, Piazza Walther and the archaeological museum with the mummified body of Ötzi, the Ice Man.

The spa town of Merano

The clean air and mild climate attracted Sisi Empress of Austria to Merano back in the 19th century. Most attractive sights: the Tappeiner promenade, the Lungo Passirio promenade, the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle and the historic centre of Merano.
